Filmmaker Karan Johar's Hindi remake of "Stepmom" will be shot in Sydney and will create 200 jobs for people in the Australian city, said Virginia Judge, minister assisting the Premier on the Arts."This movie will take Sydney to Bollywood and an audience of more than one billion people. This is the first Australian production from one of Bollywood's most iconic filmmakers Karan Johar," said Judge Tuesday in a press statement. To be directed by Siddharth Malhotra, the film is inspired by director Chris Columbus' 1998 hit drama "Stepmom", a heartwarming tale of two women - divorced Susan Sarandon and the new woman (Julia Roberts) in her ex-husband's life - and the problems they face to find a common ground of understanding. Shot extensively in Paris and London, the story revolves around childhood friends Arjun (Ajay) and Mannu (Salman) who have a music lineage in their family history. Arjun dreams of being on stage as a performer to live up to his grandfather's unfulfilled ambitions while Mannu has little interest in the instruments of his father, a music teacher. Arjun's determination takes him to London where he forms a band with Priya (Asin) and others. But his friend Mannu tries to make his livelihood as a wedding band performer in the village. By chance Anurag saw me in a party and I got 'Dev D'; otherwise things wouldn't have shaped this way," Mahie told IANS. Talking about her days of struggle, she said: "When you dress up every morning, go for auditions and at the end of the day you don't get work, you feel bad. Sometimes you feel that you are better than the other person, still you don't get work. That's when you feel very frustrated. But one needs to be patient." The actress was in New Delhi to attend the 11th Osian's-Cinefan Film Festival of Asian and Arab Cinema. Her next release is Tigmanshu Dhulia's "Paan Singh Tomar". She teams up with Irrfan Khan in the film, which is scheduled for release in February next year. Talking about "Paan Singh Tomar", Mahie said: In this film, I am playing Paan Singh Tomar's wife. He was an athlete who later became a dacoit. His wife is still alive. She is very old now. I am playing a woman who is very talkative and short tempered." Moreover, I am not a quintessential hero in the film. However, it isn't as if I have a special appearance in the film, as has been speculated by some. I have a substantial role that lasts for 30-40 minutes in the film," Shahid, who had two releases - "Kaminey" and "Dil Bole Hadippa" this year -, told IANS. "Paathshala" was earlier being co-produced by choreographer-turned-filmmaker Ahmed Khan with Big Pictures. However, as per current developments, Eros International would be presenting the film. The first look of the film was revealed a year ago with "Karzzzz". It was expected that the film would release in January 2009, but it continued to move ahead. Directed by award-winning Marathi film director Milind Ukey, "Paatshala" is expected to release in the first half of 2010. "Yes, the film moved from Big Pictures to Eros and they would be making plans to line up the film in a proper manner. However, I am sure they would have the right campaign in place for the film's release. The film has to be protected and released when there is no other film of mine coming up," said Shahid, who plays a teacher in it. The film brings together Ayesha Takia with Shahid after "Dil Maange More" and "Fool-N-Final". Incidentally, the two had worked together years ago as child artistes in the famous commercial for the health drink Complan. The film also stars Nana Patekar along with child artistes Swini Khara, Ali Haji and Dwij Yadav. Set against the Indian education system, "Paathshala" deals with contemporary and socially relevant issues regarding children. It claims to carry a heartfelt message for children, parents and teachers. "It's a very socially relevant film and talks about the education system in the country. I am really happy to have played a role in it. I have seen the rushes of the film and really cried throughout. I get really emotional when watching a film. Even during 'Taare Zameen Par', I cried throughout and was looking around me if anyone was watching me," he said. Unlike "Taare Zameen Par", which was shot on real locations, "Paathshala" was filmed on a set. To give it an authentic look, Khan had erected a massive set of a school at Film City -- it consisted of class rooms, dormitories, principal's cabin, staff rooms, half a dozen huge corridors, basket ball court, garden, assembly hall, music room and canteen.

But for her second film Zoya Akhtar has specially written a part for brother Farhan."It's a road movie set in Spain about three boys and one of the three characters is definitely Farhan. I knew I wanted him. I was very clear that I wanted to work with him again," said Zoya. Daughter of well-known lyricist Javed Akhtar, Zoya informed that her writer filmmaker-actor brother will not only act in the film, but also pen the dialogues for it. "I am writing this film with Reema Kagti. I'm wrapping up the script but as of now it is not locked yet. Then probably I'll sit with Farhan for the dialogues and the casting," she said. Throwing light on the film, she said: "It's a coming of age genre. But it'll be simpler than ‘Luck By Chance' and simpler to understand. "Dev D" actress Kalki Koechlin says her boyfriend Anurag Kashyap, who has written screenplays and dialogues for memorable films like "Satya" and "Black Friday", thinks she is a better writer than him."Anurag thinks he is a useless writer. He thinks I'm a much better dialogue writer than him. He thinks a lot about the whole plot and not so much about the individual dialogues," Kalki, who made her acting debut with Kashyap's directorial venture "Dev D", told IANS in an interview in New Delhi. "But I don't think I can ever direct anything like him because I don't have that overall vision. I can never think of the whole script, which I think is the director's forte. I can only write for the moment," added the 26-year-old who is co-scripting a film with her beau. "Anurag and I are doing a film together, which is very exciting. But I can't talk anything about it right now except that it's a thriller. "It's his idea. He narrated it to me a year back and asked me if I wanted to write it. I initially denied because I didn't think I could take that responsibility but then I wrote the first draft and he transformed it by adding more pieces and putting them together to give it the form of a story," she explained. Kalki describes Kashyap as an open minded director. "He gives you the space and lets you do things on your own. He always gives a chance to the deserving," she said, on the sidelines of the 11th edition of the annual Osian's Cinefan Film Festival of Asian and Arab Cinema. Talking about her relationship with Kashyap, she said: "Being together with him has worked a lot in our professional life too because we have been constantly challenging our creative sensibilities. Both of us are very intense in the way we think and take things." Before venturing into films with "Dev D", she studied "drama and theatre in university" and "majored in scriptwriting and acting". The film is a contemporary interpretation of Sarat Chandra Chattopadhyay's classic novel "Devdas" and Kalki played the role of a prostitute Chanda in it. Born to French parents, Kalki apparently took Hindi lessons for "Dev D" and is still working on her dialect and diction. "I still have to work a lot on it (Hindi)," said the actress who is fluent in French and Tamil. Her other projects are Bijoy Nambiar's "Shaitan" and Kaizad Gustad's next. Paresh Mokashi, whose Marathi film "Harishchandrachi Factory" has been selected as India's official entry to the Oscars, is stuck without a visa to the US.The US consulate in Mumbai refused to give him the visa, saying they didn't know him or that his film is going for the Oscars. "I don't really blame them. I didn't have a face that was instantly recognisable. They didn't know who I was. And I had no papers to prove that this disoriented looking man had made a film that had been sent to the Oscars," Mokashi told IANS. The director had no papers, not even a letter from the Academy Awards committee to prove his eligibility for the visa because he had given all the documents to his producers - UTV. "Whatever intimation I received about the Oscar entry from the US, I handed over to UTV. But, of course, the US consulate didn't say I was lying. They rightly felt I was not eligible until I had the documents. This was my first encounter for an American visa. And naturally my first trip to the US," said Mokashi. "The only time I've been abroad was to London to shoot a part of 'Hrishchandrachi Factory'. So I was completely unaware of how things work. I don't know how to handle it," added the director who had to mortgage his property to make the film. UTV had to step in to rescue the director, who needs to be in LA from Nov 2. "The US consulate has promised to give me a visa after taking my passport. They said they'd grant me a visa. Let's see. They had yet to decide for how long and in what capacity. They seem to have a very thin line dividing the people who want to visit for genuine reasons from those who are wrongly motivated," he said. Mokashi hopes to be in the US for 25 days in November to promote the film for the Oscars. "I need to understand the situation. I've never been to the Oscars, have no idea of how the Oscars work. I also need to be back for the film's release in India. Then I return to the US to be with the film till the Oscars," he said.

Akshay Kumar says when Blue director Anthony D'Souza approached him for the underwater thriller; the first thing he asked him was "Are you capable of making the movie?” Touted to be India's first underwater film, which is said to match international standards of filmmaking, Blue promises to bring with it some never-seen-before visuals and stunts."The first thing I did was to look straight into his eyes and ask him - 'Do you actually think you are capable enough of making a film of this scale, genre and setting? You may say that you want to shoot the film in space or on the moon, but saying something and doing it are two different things. So how will you actually shoot the film?"As things turned out, D'Souza had done his homework well in advance and showed some of his work from the past, which included certain advertisements he had directed as well as some groundwork on Blue."Honestly, it all led me to at least start lending an ear to him. I became further interested in knowing how he was going to execute Blue," Akshay told IANS."After all there were going to be extreme stunts in it and that too under water. Then Tony (D'Souza) also showed me the work of the DOP (director of photography) Pete Zuccarini."He is the same guy who has also shot Pirates of the Caribbean. He even made me talk to him and once I did that, I was quite satisfied that at least Tony had his heart in the right place and he had done his homework well."Once on board, Akshay wasn't too worried about the fact that a film like Blue had never been attempted before on the Indian screen."I am sure that it would be legendary in its own way. Let's see how the box office treats, but while doing the film we went all out for Blue. Veteran Hindi film actress Shabana Azmi, who was in Dhaka to inaugurate a painting exhibition, says that South Asians will have to work together without losing their diversity if they want a place in the global arena."We, South Asians, have to work together if we intend to make our presence felt on the global stage. No, we're not talking about homogeneity. This is not a melting pot where individual identities get submerged. The subcontinent is a colourful mosaic and this diversity is our strength," she said, while inaugurating the painting exhibition.The actress was moved by the works of Bangladeshi artist Shahabuddin that depict the travails of the people during their liberation war against Pakistan in 1971."Words cannot adequately express the overwhelming emotions surfacing when I saw his works," The Daily Star quoted her as saying Monday.The exhibition has been named "Jai Bangla", a slogan given by the country's founding father, Sheikh Mujibur Rahman. More than 50 composers, including Oscar-winning music director AR Rahman, will come together for a musical night organised by the All India Film Employees Confederation (AIFEC) as part of the three-day national conference starting October 9.Apart from Rahman, some well-known names from southern cinema such as Ilayaraja, MS Vishwanathan, Yuvan Shankar Raja, Harris Jayaraj, Deva and Patnaik will perform on the inaugural day of the event.Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi, who started his film career at the age of 17, will be conferred the Global Achiever Award at the AIFEC meet, said C Guhanathan, president of Film Employees Federation of South India (FEFSI) at a press conference Monday.Rajinikant and Kamal Haasan will attend the inaugural day event.
